Freelancing… as a florist is the term often used to describe working with other Florists, to help deliver a big project that need many hands-on deck.

Over the last few years, I have freelanced at a busy flower shop in Winchester, with other studio florists in Southampton and at Hampshire Flower farms with in-houses florists working with the flowers they grow on site.

There are lots of florists around in Hampshire, we all have different styles and approaches, and our businesses are made of all shapes and sizes. There are plenty of us who form a supportive community, helping one another out when we need to deliver big jobs. Depending on what I am working on, I have a select team of wonderful folk who come to help me too.

Most of the time, it’s just me here at Sarah Guild Floral Design, I am the Creative Director, Head of Logistics, Accountant, Marketing / Social Media manager and chief Stockist of bud vases and biscuits!

Sometimes this is the best, as I get to choose when to be busy, if I can fit in a run, when to work. However sometimes being the everything and the everyone in a business can be a lot for one brain!

So when I get asked to work with other florists to help deliver their big projects I say yes, pack my lunch get on-board. I love going to work with pair of snips ready to work. I don’t mind what I do – sometimes it can be cutting 1000’s of stems at a Flower Farm, making up bouquets for retail outlet. Other times (like last week) it can be helping to create Wedding arrangements for multiple locations.

It always feels good to be a part of team, enjoying the social aspect of having colleagues for the week. It’s enriching to creating flowers to new colour palettes and exchanging ideas about how to make things – in my experience every florist will have different way of wiring a flower, conditioning a rose, and making a bouquet.

We all learn from one another, which in turn helps inspire us to create new projects, colour palettes. Over the Summer I’ll be freelancing as well as launching a Podcast and delivering my own Wedding work.

Watch this space I’ll share stories about my adventures via Instagram & Facebook.
